Automatic sync
Keeps your spreadsheet current without anyone opening it.
Turn it on
- In the sidebar open Settings.
- Under Automatic sync choose Every hour, Every 6 hours or Once a day (and the hour).
- Click Save settings.
It runs with the Google account of the person who turned it on, even when the spreadsheet is closed. Home shows when the next run is due.
If it fails
- The error shows on Home and in the Sync log tab.
- After 3 failed runs in a row, the person who turned it on gets one email (you can turn this off in Settings). Google does not send any email of its own when a script's schedule fails.
- Being asked to slow down by a platform is not a failure: the sync simply continues on the next run.
Good to know
- Google lets a script run on its own at most once an hour.
- Personal Google accounts get 90 minutes of scheduled run time a day; a sync usually takes seconds once history is downloaded.
- If a colleague changes how often it runs, automatic sync moves to their Google account. Saving other settings does not move it.
- When the trial ends without a license, automatic sync pauses and the Sync log says so. It starts again when you enter a key.
